John Wesley Church & Nellie Brooks Leatherberry African American Museum

The John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church — an unassuming one-room building without a steeple or indoor plumbing — served as an important house of worship for generations. A John Wesley activist, Nellie Leatherberry, finagled a way to have a 9’ x 12’ “cook shop” constructed; it operated until the late 1970s. Nellie’s Cook Shop will eventually become the church museum and house the church’s fascinating documentary photography and oral history transcriptions.
