John Wesley Church & Nellie Brooks Leatherberry African American Museum

For generations, a racially mixed congregation worshipped in this little church, an unassuming one-room building without a steeple or indoor plumbing. A John Wesley activist, Nellie Leatherberry found a way to have a 9’ x 12’ “cook shop” constructed. Over the years, it nearly tripled in size and operated until the late 1970s. Nellie’s Cook Shop now houses the church’s documentary photography and oral history transcriptions.
