2015 is starting with a bang here in Talbot County. You see, we have special guests in town to help us celebrate the coming of a New Year.
CNN has dispatched a crew to Easton to cover our First Night Talbot festivities, with special emphasis on the Maryland Crab Drop. I am writing to the steady hum of the satellite truck parked just outside the Visitor Center here at 11 S. Harrison Street, as the producer and camera operators run cable and set up for the evening broadcast.
This is especially exciting for all of the dedicated volunteers who have organized First Night Talbot all of these years, an event that comes of age in 2014 as it marks its 21st year. First Night offers family-friendly activities in an alcohol-free environment. You can find live entertainment ranging from gospel choirs and bluegrass to mimes and jugglers. No matter your age, you’ll be hard-pressed not to find something you like!
Then at both 9 p.m. and midnight, we’ll welcome the new year by dropping our soon-to-be famous Maryland Crab. It may seem hokey to some, but the crab is a symbol of the Eastern Shore culture and lifestyle, as well as a tribute to our watermen, who earn their livelihood fishing for the crabs, oysters and rockfish we enjoy.
If you can’t be here in person, tune in to CNN tonight from 9 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. You might just catch a glimpse of Talbot County!
