For one night only, join us for a culinary feast in celebration of the new season at The Oaks Waterfront Hotel in Royal Oak, featuring a five-course meal crafted with farm-to-table ingredients by five noted local chefs.

Our distinguished chefs will showcase the culinary bounty of the region with dishes that highlight the flavors of the season.

St. Paul’s Parish, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, included three “chapels-of-ease” –the name traditionally given to church buildings constructed for the convenience of parishioners too remote to travel easily to the main parish church. One of the chapels-of-ease for St. Paul’s was “St. Luke’s Chapel, Wye”, located at the (then) head of navigation of the Wye River. In 1717, the St. Paul’s vestry contracted to build a replacement for the original St. Luke’s church, resulting in the structure that is now called Old Wye Church.

Funding for the church building plus a communion table and pulpit—came from local taxes (permitted in pre-Revolution Church of England North America), but the pews and all the other interior finishing had to be funded by the parishioners. Pews in the new church were auctioned off with tobacco as the medium of exchange. Four years later, St. Luke’s Chapel, Wye was opened in 1721.

In 1765, the vestry complained that Wye Chapel was “so small and incommodious that near one half of the Inhabitants in this part of the said Parish are without Seats… to attend Divine Worship therein”. Plans were made and funds were sought for an expansion of Old Wye, but the project was postponed and then abandoned (although a single gallery ultimately did get added, in 1792) due to the events of the American Revolution.

After the war, the English Church in America reorganized itself as the Protestant Episcopal Church. In the space of 20 years, Wye had six different rectors. In the 1830’s, all services ceased and the chapel, almost falling down, was being used as a stable for cattle.

During the Victorian period, the church went through changes and revivals but was in dire need of preservation by the 1920s. While repairs had been made in 1923 to the interior, little had been done to the damage to its exterior, which was bulging out and ready to fall under the weight of the slate roof. In 1947, Mr. Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., inspired by his involvement with reviving Colonial Williamsburg, completed a total restoration of the church and reconstruction of the vestry house from 1763.

On Friday I will be at the launch party for the new Studio 2 gallery in St. Michaels, Maryland. Anyone is welcome to come check out the original one-of-a-kind pieces that I will have on exhibit. My friend and the gallery’s owner Susan Oberreither magic8ball has an incredible collection of artwork from a variety of artists on the walls of the new space.
