Discover

Discover the History

Established in 1650, Tilghman Island was destined to be a waterman’s village. In the early 19th century, parcels of land were sold to oystermen, who bought them up to be closer to the prime harvesting grounds surrounding the island. By the turn of the next century, steamboat service brought visitors from Baltimore, Washington and points beyond. Today, the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum shares the stories and images of the area’s maritime heritage.

Get Back to Nature

Nature is nautical on Tilghman Island. You can enjoy the great outdoors with a stroll through the community, but that would hardly do the island justice. Rent a bike instead and take advantage of the flat roadways and paths with a leisurely ride around the island. Better yet, take advantage of the surrounding water and charter a boat for the day—to sail, fish, crab, or get an up-close view of the Bay’s lighthouses.
