Discovering Maryland’s Other Shore

“When you think about Maryland’s Eastern Shore, it’s likely that destinations along the Atlantic coast, such as Ocean City, come to mind,” writes author Jim Cheney on a lengthy piece on Talbot County published recently. It’s Talbot County—what he calls Maryland’s “other shore”—that he strongly urges readers to visit with its 600 miles of shore along the Chesapeake Bay.

Cheney first writes about Easton, the largest community in Talbot County. “A great way to start your visit to Talbot County is with a walking tour of downtown Easton.” He highlights the Chesapeake Ghost Tours and the picturesque Tidewater Inn (where celebrities like Elvis Presley have stayed). Next stop, Cheney describes St. Michaels as an ideal destination to shop. “The community’s small downtown area offers shopping, beautiful scenery and a chance to explore the culture of the region,” he writes. He also dishes on the town’s winery, brewery and distillery.

Finally, Cheney praises Oxford for its stunning historical architecture. “The community of Oxford also offers a great way to learn about the history and culture of the Eastern Shore,” Cheney explains. The Oxford-Belleview Ferry alone has the author hooked since it’s been carrying visitors across the water since the late 1700s—making it the oldest operating ferry in the country. Situated next to the dock of the ferry, the Robert Morris Inn (built in 1710) is home to an award-winning chef who serves fresh flavors from the Chesapeake Bay.
