Though its picturesque setting earned national attention as the backdrop for the movie “Wedding Crashers,” St. Michaels’ physical beauty offers only a glimpse of its idyllic charm. Nestled along the Miles River in the heart of the Chesapeake, the historic waterfront town provides itineraries for trips of all kinds, from romantic getaways to family vacations. Home to museums and boutiques, gourmet restaurants and crab shacks, and plenty of adventure by land or by sea, foodies, sailors, wine connoisseurs and art enthusiasts alike can get lost in all the town has to offer.
Early one morning in August 1813, British barges floated up the Miles River and planned an attack on St. Michaels. The local militia mounted a spirited defense though, blocking the harbor and repelling the world’s most feared naval forces. These rich and entertaining pieces of history are alive and well in St. Michaels, where the town’s story is waiting to be told. Discover instrumental people in the town’s history at the St. Michaels Museum and explore the critical role of the skipjack at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Learn about the significance of historical landmarks on a historic walking tour.
Shop boutiques, browse antiques, and indulge in homemade ice cream on Talbot Street. Rent bicycles or a scooter and let the wind be your guide. Find your inner artist at one of the many galleries. Pick Chesapeake Bay blue crabs. Partake in a tour and a tasting at the town’s winery, brewery or distillery—the perfect prelude to the culinary tour: a delicious meal at one of many award-winning restaurants. Choose a quiet weekend to explore the town on your own or be inspired by the energy of other visitors by planning your trip around one of the many lively town-wide festivals.
If your idea of enjoying the great outdoors is sitting on a patio with a refreshing cocktail in hand, St. Michaels can deliver. But if you want to soak up the sun, hit the trails, or get out on the water, you won’t be disappointed either. In addition to beautiful parks and miles of trails for walking and biking, St. Michaels’ seemingly endless shoreline offers visitors a chance to get a duck’s eye view. Rent a standup paddleboard, a kayak, a canoe, even a boat or a jet ski. Get your work out on or relax, sail the day away, or take a sunset cruise. The nautical choice is yours.
This beloved destination is continuously mentioned on national lists as a top destination for shopping, food, and most beautiful small towns in America. Situated beside the Miles River, step back into 19th century ambience, but with 21st century conveniences, and while the hours away in the unique shops, indulge in steamed crabs, and get out on the water. Create your own experience with these offerings from St. Michaels.

St. Paul’s Parish, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, included three “chapels-of-ease” –the name traditionally given to church buildings constructed for the convenience of parishioners too remote to travel easily to the main parish church. One of the chapels-of-ease for St. Paul’s was “St. Luke’s Chapel, Wye”, located at the (then) head of navigation of the Wye River. In 1717, the St. Paul’s vestry contracted to build a replacement for the original St. Luke’s church, resulting in the structure that is now called Old Wye Church.
Funding for the church building plus a communion table and pulpit—came from local taxes (permitted in pre-Revolution Church of England North America), but the pews and all the other interior finishing had to be funded by the parishioners. Pews in the new church were auctioned off with tobacco as the medium of exchange. Four years later, St. Luke’s Chapel, Wye was opened in 1721.
In 1765, the vestry complained that Wye Chapel was “so small and incommodious that near one half of the Inhabitants in this part of the said Parish are without Seats… to attend Divine Worship therein”. Plans were made and funds were sought for an expansion of Old Wye, but the project was postponed and then abandoned (although a single gallery ultimately did get added, in 1792) due to the events of the American Revolution.
After the war, the English Church in America reorganized itself as the Protestant Episcopal Church. In the space of 20 years, Wye had six different rectors. In the 1830’s, all services ceased and the chapel, almost falling down, was being used as a stable for cattle.
During the Victorian period, the church went through changes and revivals but was in dire need of preservation by the 1920s. While repairs had been made in 1923 to the interior, little had been done to the damage to its exterior, which was bulging out and ready to fall under the weight of the slate roof. In 1947, Mr. Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., inspired by his involvement with reviving Colonial Williamsburg, completed a total restoration of the church and reconstruction of the vestry house from 1763.

☔️The much needed rains are finally here!! Despite the disruption to any outdoor weekend plans, we really have to celebrate.
🥵It has been hotter and drier than most of us can remember it being for a very long time, and it’s hard to get food to market under such challenging conditions.
🛌Please don’t let tomorrow’s showers give you a reason to miss market.
🌽Come out! Grab your yummies, stock up on smiles, and then, if you wish, you can hunker down and enjoy sweet sound of rain hitting the roof.
🧡We’re open RAIN OR SHINE, 8:30-11:30 @ 206 S. Talbot Street. We’re verified local. And we can’t wait to see you!
