Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Annual Charity Boat Auction

The 2024 charity boat auction.

Bid on adventure at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Annual Charity Boat Auction, a waterfront tradition where donated boats find new homes and every sale supports maritime education and preservation.

Set on CBMM’s historic campus in St. Michaels, the auction brings together first-time buyers and seasoned skippers for a full day of previews and bidding. Expect an eclectic fleet – from dinghies, skiffs, and classic sailboats to center consoles and cruisers – plus nautical gear, food vendors, and bay views. Proceeds benefit CBMM’s exhibits, collections care, boatbuilding, and hands-on programs for all ages.

What to Expect

A lively, family-friendly auction with professional auctioneers, clearly posted lot information, and staff/volunteers on hand to answer questions about titles, transfer, and pickup. Many boats come from CBMM’s year-round donation program, with options suited to a range of budgets and skill levels.

Boats & Bidding

The fleet typically includes paddlecraft, small outboards, trailerable sailboats, daysailers, fishing boats, and occasional classics. Some lots may feature a suggested “buy-it-now” price or post-auction sale opportunities. All vessels are offered as-is; review descriptions and inspect in person before you bid.

How It Works

Register for a bidder number on site (photo ID required). Listen for auction terms regarding deposits, acceptable payment methods, and pickup windows. Winning bidders receive settlement instructions and details for trailering or arranging transport. Title/registration transfer is coordinated after payment is complete.

Preview & Sea Trials

Boat preview is available on auction morning, with additional preview opportunities often scheduled in the days prior. Limited sea trials may be arranged on select boats when conditions and staffing allow – ask CBMM’s Boat Donations team about availability and requirements.

On-Site Experience

Enjoy food and beverage vendors, museum gift shop browsing, and time to explore parts of the campus between lots. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for walking the grounds and inspecting vessels.

Proceeds & Impact

Every sale directly supports CBMM’s mission – safeguarding Chesapeake Bay history, advancing traditional boatbuilding skills, and delivering educational programs that connect people to the Bay.

Registration & Schedule

Dates, preview times, bidder registration, terms of sale, and a sample inventory are posted on the event page each year. Field sizes and lot lists can change; check for the latest updates and any weather notices before you go.

Plan Your Visit

Make a weekend of it in St. Michaels: stroll the harbor, visit nearby shops and galleries, and refuel at local seafood spots. Lodging ranges from inns and B&Bs to waterfront hotels within a short drive.

Accessibility & Visitor Tips

Parts of the campus are on historic, uneven surfaces – closed-toe shoes are recommended. If you have accessibility needs, contact CBMM in advance to coordinate parking and viewing areas. Trailers and tow vehicles should arrive early for easier staging.
